Software Product Assurance Engineer, in the Software Product Assurance Section, Quality, Dependability and PA Support Division, Product Assurance and Safety Department, Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality.

The Section provides functional support to ESA projects and is responsible for the development, implementation and maintenance of SW PA expertise and standards. It carries out technological research (R&D) in the fields of SW PA requirements, techniques, methodologies and tools. It also collaborates on standardisation and training activities.

Reporting to the Head of Section and within the technical fields described above, your main tasks and responsibilities will include:

• providing expert technical support and consultancy to ESA projects, which includes involvement in projects’ major reviews and when applicable boards and panels;

• supporting projects in monitoring contractor SW PA programme execution to ensure compliance with SW PA requirements established for them;

• preparing and implementing general programmatic and technical SW PA requirements aligned with Agency standards and specifications;

• establishing project-specific programmatic and technical SW PA requirements based on the ESA PA baseline

• supporting projects in evaluating contractor documentation and efforts proposed for the execution of SW PA programmes;

• supporting projects in monitoring contractor SW PA programme execution to ensure compliance with SW PA requirements established for them;

• evaluating proposed concepts, designs and operations for compliance with defined SW PA requirements, this to include performing associated audits;

• defining, initiating and managing R&D activities (SW PA requirements, techniques, methodologies, tools) covering long-/short-term needs;

• supporting and at the line management’s request participating in the Directorate’s competence domain activities;

• auditing contractors and their in-house standards for compliance with ESA requirements, assessing the maturity of their software processes;

• liaising with related engineering and PA specialists for overlapping fields of activity;

A Master’s degree or equivalent qualification in computer science, mathematics or software engineering is required.

Experience in at least three of the following areas: software product assurance in critical real-time applications, software engineering, software configuration management, dependability assessment of software intensive systems, software development and maintenance, software process assessment and auditing.
You must be eligible for security clearance by your national security administration.

The working languages of the Agency are English and French. A good knowledge of one of these is required. Knowledge of another Member State language would be an asset.

Description

Software System Engineer in the Flight Software Systems Section, Software Systems Division, Systems Department, Directorate of Technology, Engineering and Quality.
• The Flight Software Systems Section provides support to ESA projects and carries out technology research and development (R&D) in the fields of real-time embedded software systems, flight software systems development and software validation facilities;
• Future challenges addressed in the Section include new generation processors and their software environments, or modern software development approaches such as model-based and agile methods and their suitability for safety critical software; also autonomy concepts and their implementation and validation are becoming increasingly relevant.

Responsibilities

• Providing expert technical support and consultancy to ESA projects, programmes and general studies in the field of real-time embedded software systems, flight software systems development and software validation facilities focused on both simulated environments and hardware in the loop;
• Supporting a wide variety of ESA space missions in the field of real-time embedded software and systems;
• Participating in the full development lifecycle of the mission and on-board software;
• Identifying technical risks and critical areas in the development process while assisting in their resolution;
• Applying the principles of mission critical software development across multiple disciplines, including Robotic Exploration, Human Spaceflight, Science, Earth Observation and Telecoms;
• Participating in feasibility studies, project reviews and evaluation of procurement proposals;
• Contributing to the definition of R&D requirements and work plans for the Agency’s technology programmes;
• Defining, initiating and managing R&D activities covering both long- and short-term needs;
Fostering new application areas for multidisciplinary activities, placing emphasis on innovative concepts, cutting-edge technologies and system architectures;
• Monitoring applicable scientific and technological trends and maintaining a state-of-the-art expertise;
• Contributing to the dissemination of the results of the activities performed and the transfer of knowledge across the Agency;

Profile

Technical competencies

• A good understanding of modern software engineering methods and tools, R&D trends and the industrial landscape;
• Experience in real-time embedded software;
• Knowledge of all phases of the software development lifecycle;
• Experience in software development projects;
• Spacecraft systems knowledge;
• Project support experience in a relevant domain;
• Experience in the management and monitoring of industrial activities, including participation in reviews;
• Experience with Space Engineering Standards and their preparation and implementation.

Education

A Master’s degree in computer science and/or electrical engineering is required.

Additional requirements

• Applicants for this post should have a background and experience in embedded real-time systems;
• Expert knowledge in the programming languages, including but not limited to C and Ada;
Hands-on experience of device driver development on e.g. Leon and ARM processors and interfaces such as CAN, SpaceWire and MilBus1553;
• Development experience from using RealTime kernels such as RTEMS;
• Extensive knowledge of modern software engineering and practical experience in spacecraft software engineering is required.
